Leeds and District Hard of Hearing Club

A photo of the members of the hard of hearing club playing cardsThe Leeds and District Hard of Hearing Club has been in action for many years and meets at Centenary House. It gives support and organises social activities for people with moderate hearing problems.

If you are hard of hearing and need company and support, our members meet each Thursday around 2 pm for social activities, some refreshment and a chat. During the summer, a monthly outing to the coast or to a place of interest is arranged, or sometimes we have a meal out – usually somewhere in the Leeds area to make travelling easier for members.

Leeds Hard of Hearing Forum

Do you have problems with your hearing – conversation – TV – cinema – theatre – telephone – etc? We can help you.

The Forum was formed in 1983 by a group of hard of hearing people who were frustrated by the lack of technological assistance and support. The group had come together through lip-reading classes and, in a year which was denoted International Year of the Disabled, had found no recognition of hearing loss as a disability.

Based at Centenary House, we are a lively group of hearing-impaired people of mixed ages. We have an active social calendar, with a mixture of fun days and informative meetings. We also campaign at a high level, with great success, to raise the profile of the specific needs of hard of hearing people.

Leeds Deaf Football Club

A photo of the Leeds deaf football teamThe Leeds Deaf Football Club was established in 1905 and has been a strong part of the deaf community ever since.

We currently have two teams, one for men and the other for women. Both teams compete in 11-a-side, 8-a-side, 7-a-side and 5-a-side tournaments and leagues. We are members of the British Deaf Sports Council, English Deaf Football Team and Yorkshire and Humberside Deaf Football Council.

As well as playing in a hearing league every Saturday, we also compete on a national and international level against other deaf competitors.

The local matches are a big part of the Club, and training takes place once a week, with a professional coach provided by Leeds United Football Club.

All players from 16 onwards are welcome to join the Club; we accept all levels of hearing impairment and do not limit membership to profoundly deaf sign language users. We also allow hearing players to be involved, if they have deaf family members and want to be part of the deaf community. These players will be able to take part in the hearing league, though only deaf players are allowed to compete in the deaf league and cup matches.

The Club now has its own website at www.leedsdfc.co.uk. If you are interested in joining, please contact Paul Young on: Mobile (text message only -SMS) 07876 124493 or by E-mail paulphonak@aol.com

Leeds Deaf Social Club

Leeds Deaf Social Club has been open since 1978, and is run solely by deaf people, although everyone is welcome here. We open every Tuesday and the first and third Saturday of the month to socialise with members and play bingo. The Club is open during the day as a drop-in centre for deaf or hard of hearing people, and the café, containing a cybercafé, is now open for business. We have over four hundred members and this number is steadily growing. We have several different groups within the Club which help to run different monthly events. An annual membership cost £3 starting every September; for Senior Citizens it costs £1.50 per year, young people under 18 also pay £1.50 per year, and children under 16 can be members for free.
